Who is the Holy Spirit?

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Ellen White wrote it this way:

“They were two, yet little short of being identical; two in individuality, yet ONE IN SPIRIT,” (E.G. White, YI, Dec 16, 1897)

“The Father gave HIS Spirit without measure to his Son,” (E.G. White, RH, Nov 5, 1908)

“In giving us HIS Spirit, God gives us HIMSELF,” (E.G. White, 7T 273.1, 1902)

“The Holy Spirit, which proceeds from the only begotten Son of God,” (E.G. White, RH, April 5, 1906)

“The HOLY SPIRIT is the SPIRIT of CHRIST, which is sent to all men to give them sufficiency,” (E.G. White, 14MR 84.3)

“We want the HOLY SPIRIT, which is JESUS CHRIST. If we commune with God, we shall have strength and grace and efficiency.” (E.G. White, Lt66, April 10, 1894)

“But it is the leaven of the SPIRIT of JESUS CHRIST, which is sent down from heaven, called the HOLY GHOST, and that Spirit affects the heart and the character.” (E.G. White, Ms36-1891) Continue reading “Who is the Holy Spirit?”

The Comforter as a Distinct Personality

PDF – The Comforter -A DISTINCT PERSONALITY, by Paul Chung

The Holy Spirit is the Comforter, in Christ’s name. HE PERSONIFIES CHRIST, YET IS A DISTINCT PERSONALITY. We may have the Holy Spirit if we ask for it and make it [a] habit to turn to and trust in God rather than in any finite human agent who may make mistakes. {20MR 324.2}

Trinitarian object: If the “distinct personality” statements by Ellen White proves that Father and Son are separate and different entities with two distinct personages, then Holy Spirit while personifying Christ and “yet is a distinct personality” proves Holy Spirit is a separate, distinct personality or a personal being.

Response:

The word, distinct can mean different or it can also mean clear. Notice how Sister White uses the expression below:

WE NEED TO HAVE MORE DISTINCT VIEWS OF JESUS and a fuller comprehension of the value of eternal realities. The beauty of holiness is to fill the hearts of God’s children; and that this may be accomplished, we should seek for divine disclosures of heavenly things. {Steps to Christ 99.3}

LOOKING UNTO JESUS WE OBTAIN BRIGHTER AND MORE DISTINCT VIEW OF GOD, and by beholding we become changed. Goodness, love for our fellow men, becomes our natural instinct. {COL 355.1} Continue reading “The Comforter as a Distinct Personality”

Is the Holy Spirit God in Acts 5:3-4?

Acts 5:3-4But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?1 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”

In what sense is lying to the Holy Ghost = lying to God? And–the most direct and obvious question–do these verses make the Holy Spirit God?

The answer lies in a simple comparison with Bible texts that offer a similar parallel:

  • Mt 25:40 “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” But brethren Jesus!
  • Acts 9:4 “Why persecutes thou me?” Paul was really persecuting Christians, which means persecuting Christ, but . . .Christ Christians.
  • 1 Cor 8:12 “When ye sin so against the brethren . . . ye sin against Christ.” Brethren Christ.

If the Holy Spirit is God’s representative, of course lying against the Holy Spirit means lying against God – but it doesn’t make the two the same being, nor does it make the Holy Spirit God.

To a Conference President

Hi Daniel, Just some initial comments or point seeking clarification from yourself. Can SR 13.1 be used to say that the heavenly hierarchy is God the Father, God the Son and then Lucifer? You would have to assume it’s talking about the Godhead, or about. Continue reading “To a Conference President”

The Spirit, a Being or a Person?

Thank you for taking so much time to write, but you’ll have to excuse me. My time has been taken up by so many people asking questions. What you ask is interesting to me, but not something I want to spend a whole lot of time on, as we are now touching upon the nature of the Spirit, which we are told to keep our hands off of. But, perhaps, for growth in my own understanding, I will answer quickly—trying not to go beyond what inspiration has revealed.

The Significance of Jesus Sending the Holy Spirit After His Ascension

Question:

Can you please explain the significance of Jesus sending the Holy Spirit after His ascension? I’m not clear on why you find the tenses so important.
